Island News recently shared a remarkable love story about 106-year-old Alice Beck-Darrow and her husband Dean, whose relationship began in the chaos of Pearl Harbor. Dean, a sailor aboard the USS West Virginia, was shot during the attack and later cared for by Alice, a Navy nurse assigned to him during his recovery. The two formed a bond as Alice helped him heal, and after he survived surgery to remove the bullet lodged near his heart, their connection grew into a lifelong partnership that lasted nearly 50 years. This year, Alice returned to Honolulu to donate that same bullet, a symbol of both tragedy and enduring love, to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial so their story can continue to inspire future generations.
